The short answer: choose adjustable dumbbells if space or budget is tight and you want one set that grows with you. Choose fixed dumbbells if you want the fastest, most durable setup and you have room for a rack. Many people end up with a mix: adjustable dumbbells for the home, and a few fixed pairs for the movements they use most. Ready to look? Browse our dumbbells and kettlebells.

How each type works

Fixed dumbbells are a single weight, built in one piece. You buy them in pairs, or in a set with a rack, and you pick up the weight you need. They come in rubber-coated, urethane-coated and neoprene-coated versions, and in different head shapes such as hex and round.

Adjustable dumbbells let you change the weight on one pair of handles, usually by turning a dial or handle that picks up or leaves behind plates. A single pair can replace many pairs of fixed dumbbells.

Adjustable vs fixed: side by side

What matters Adjustable Fixed
Space One compact pair replaces a whole rack A rack and floor space for every pair
Cost A higher price for one set, but it covers a whole weight range Each pair costs less, but a full range adds up
Speed of changing weight A few seconds per change, which can slow supersets and circuits Instant: you just pick up another pair
Feel and balance Handles and heads vary by design, and the shape changes with the weight Consistent shape and balance at every weight
Durability More parts that can wear, and many warranties are for residential use only No moving parts, and commercial models are built for heavy use
Weight range Limited by the model, though some go to 90 lbs or more As heavy as you can buy and store
Noise and floors Put the dumbbell back in its cradle and use a mat Rubber or urethane coatings protect floors and racks

Choose adjustable if

  • You live in a condo or an apartment, or share a room, and floor space is tight (see our guide to building a home gym in a small space).
  • You are a beginner and your weights will change as you get stronger.
  • You want a wide weight range without buying many pairs.
  • You mostly train alone, at your own pace, with straight sets.

Choose fixed if

  • You have room for a rack and want to grab weights instantly.
  • You like supersets, circuits or training with a partner, when quick changes matter.
  • You want a consistent feel and the most durable set, especially for heavy daily use.
  • You need heavy weights, or you share your gym with several users.

What to check before you buy

  • Weight range and increments: make sure the lightest weight suits your smaller exercises, such as lateral raises, and the heaviest suits your biggest lifts. Check the jump between settings.
  • Handle: check the length and diameter. A shorter handle can feel cramped for larger hands.
  • Warranty and intended use: some models are for residential use only, and heavy drops may void a warranty. Read the terms.
  • Storage: adjustable sets come with cradles, while fixed sets need a rack. Measure the space for both.
  • Your floor: put rubber flooring under either type. Our gym flooring guide explains how thick it should be.
  • Your bench: an adjustable bench turns one pair of dumbbells into a full-body workout.

The best of both

You do not have to choose only one. A good compromise is an adjustable pair for most of your training, plus one or two fixed pairs of the weights you use most, such as a pair for fast, light supersets. That keeps your setup compact, and keeps your workouts moving.

Try them before you buy them

The feel of a dumbbell in your hand matters. Spartan Fitness has showrooms across Canada where you can hold the equipment, compare handles and get advice from our team on the right weight range for your goals.

Dumbbell checklist

  • How much space do I have for storage, and do I have room for a rack?
  • Do I train alone, in straight sets, or in fast supersets and circuits?
  • Does the weight range cover my lightest and heaviest exercises?
  • Do I like the handle, and will the warranty cover how I train?
  • Do I have a bench and flooring to go with them?

Frequently asked questions

Are adjustable dumbbells worth it? Yes, if you want a wide range of weights in a small space. One pair can replace many pairs of fixed dumbbells.

Are fixed dumbbells better than adjustable ones? Fixed dumbbells are faster to use and very durable, and they feel the same at every weight. Adjustable ones save space and cost less than buying a full range.

How heavy do adjustable dumbbells go? It depends on the model. Some go to 50 lbs per dumbbell, others to 80 or 92 lbs. Check the range against your goals.

What weights should a beginner start with? A light-to-medium range lets you learn the movements and progress. An adjustable set is a good fit, since your weights will change as you get stronger.

Can I drop adjustable dumbbells? It is best not to. Lower them under control, and check the manufacturer's warranty terms, since heavy drops can damage the mechanism and may void a warranty.

Do I need a bench and flooring? They help. A bench adds many exercises, and flooring protects your floor and reduces noise.
